How to write Emotional Stories Easily
Write Your Next Story Today!
How many times have you heard others telling you that Storytelling sells?
Everyone keeps talking about how people buy with emotions.
So what if we combine the two? Would we get 2x the benefits? Nope!
The combined effect will be 10X or more effective. That is the power of Emotional Storytelling.
But Hassan, I have no idea how to do it and am bad at writing.
No worries, I got you. Today, I will help you with your story from 0 to the end.
But before we get down to the writing part, there are some questions that you need to ask yourself first and find the answers to them.
Questions for Emotional Storytelling:
Whose story is it? Is it yours, your client’s, or someone else’s?
What is your end goal? What do you want to achieve with it?
Who do you want to read this? What’s your target audience?
Why do you want to write this particular story?
Where do you want to post this?
Once you have the answers to all these questions. You will be clear on your Why, Who, Where, and What.
Congratulations, you’ve already done 25% of the work! Now time to move on to the framework.
I call this framework The Transformational Emotional Sales (TES) framework.
The premise is that we are going to make the reader take action based on the emotions they will feel from the transformational journey of before and after.
Here’s how to do it step by step:
Emotion:
Pick 1 emotion that you want to target, that you want your reader to feel, and take action based on that. You do not want to complicate this with multiple emotions.
Some common emotions to target: Love, Hope, Envy, Fear, Sadness.
Ending:
You want to write your ending first. Why? Because all the questions I told you to ask before were for this.
Do not let your story dictate your ending but write your story based on the ending.
Characters:
Generally, for social media, you want to limit your character to just 1 or 2, 3 is the max. On social media, we have a limit on the number of words we can use and the limited attention span of the audience so no need to complicate this.
What you need to make sure is that your character should have a major change, and show the reader the transformation of the character.
Starting:
Now here comes the starting finally. Introduce your character with a bit of background first.
Remember, be as precise as possible here. We do not want the reader to spend more than 30 seconds here.
Show the reader how the main character was before, and set the mood for the change and chaos that the main character will go through.
Change:
This is where the main transformation happens. Show the readers the change that the main character went through, and the action they took.
This is the part that you shine your expertise in. Don’t tell but make the readers feel the benefits of your product or service.
Transformation:
You want your reader to show the current self of the main character and how the reader can be exactly like that too.
Show the readers how the change helped the character and what exactly their future might be like if they work with you too.
Edit:
This is the part where you get rid of all the unnecessary stuff. See, which words can your story be still easy to understand without? Use the Hemingway app for this.
Remember the phrase “Kill your Darlings” by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch while editing.
Test:
Before posting a story, I like to test it in three ways.
Test it on yourself, and see if it moves you.
Test it on your best friend or family, and see if it moves them.
Test it on a fellow colleague or creator and see if it moves them.
And voila, you have a transformational emotional story that will drive sales for you!
Here is an example from 5 months back when I posted a story of my mom that went viral. Click to see!
